The Time Capsule - Photographs

"Scythia" Cunard 1948

The Cunard liner the "Scythia" was built as a luxury cruise ship but was changed to a troop-ship in WW2. Her first trip was in late 41 when she carried (amongst others) the cavalry regiment the "First Kings Dragoon Guards".

After an adventurous career that included being torpedoed, limping into Algiers and being repaired in the USA. She returned to trooping and in March 1948 returned to Liverpool bringing home the "1st Kings Dragoon Guards", leaving behind comrades on the battle-fields of North Africa, Italy, Greece and Palestine.

Post war she delivered Russian POW's of the Germans to a dubious life or death in Russia. She took families to a new life in Canada, before being sent for scrap in the early 50's.

A sad ending for a gallant lady.
